Microbiology

This course explores the characteristics of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, protists and fungi, with an emphasis on bacteria. Topics discussed include cellular structure and function, molecular genetics of bacteria, microbial metabolism and physiology, microbial diversity and ecology, and mechanisms of pathogenesis and host immunity. Through this course students will gain a deeper understanding of the microbial world and its relevance to human life, and master the tools and techniques necessary for successful laboratory investigations involving microbes.
