Exercise Science Program

Program Description

The exercise science program is a comprehensive major that provides opportunities for students to develop requisite proficiencies in preparation for careers in the exercise sciences and for admission to graduate profession schools (physical therapy, medicine, etc.). The coursework reflects standards established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Mission Statement

Exercise is vital to human health and well-being. Through accurate methods of fitness assessment and the safe and effective implementation of the exercise prescription, potential benefits are afforded to all stakeholders, including individuals, communities, and the greater society. The program in exercise science enables students to develop their potential through the acquisition of cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behaviors) that facilitate opportunities to successfully pursue careers within the rapidly growing domain of exercise science.

Program Goal

To prepare competent entry-level Exercise Science professionals in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Program Outcomes

  1. The Exercise Science professional will have general knowledge and comprehension of human anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, health fitness assessment of physical performance, exercise prescription/implementation, exercise counseling /behavioral modification and professional responsibilities and risk management.

  2. The Exercise Science professional will be able to administer preparticipation health screenings, assess client readiness for physical activity, conduct fitness assessments and prescribe appropriate exercise programs including flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, speed, agility, coordination, plyometrics, reaction time and power for apparently healthy individuals and those with controlled chronic conditions.

  3. The Exercise Science professional will design and implement safe, effective, and individualized exercise programs for apparently healthy individuals and those with controlled chronic conditions, based on assessment results, current health status, fitness goals, time availability and environmental factors. Programs will encompass flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, speed, agility, coordination, plyometrics, reaction time and power, with appropriate progression guidelines and collaboration with healthcare providers as needed.

  4. The Exercise Science professional will apply effective communication skills, behavioral strategies, motivational techniques and provide ongoing support and educational resources within scope of practice to optimize the adoption and long-term adherence to exercise and other healthy lifestyle behaviors.

  5. The Exercise Science professional will be able to develop, organize, administer and provide program oversight as well as disseminate risk management guidelines for a health/fitness facility to reduce member, employee, and business risk and ensure that emergency policies and procedures are in place.
