Advanced Vocabulary

Students will continue to build their academic vocabulary from the Academic Word List in preparation for handling college level course material. Students will continue to work with synonyms, antonyms, roots, and affixes in order to promote more rapid expansion of vocabulary, as well as using these words in various contexts including word form charts, readings, journaling and interactive activities in class in order to promote deep learning and retention. Additionally, at this level student will continue to explore the deeper nuances in the meaning of targeted vocabulary, as well as continuing to develop learning strategies for increasing their academic vocabulary. Class activities will be both written and verbal: spelling and pronunciation of targeted vocabulary will be emphasized.
