Reading & Writing V

Students at this level are advanced readers. They should have little trouble reading a current news article and cogently discussing it in depth, including understanding personal and socio-political ramifications. ESL texts at the very advanced level only are appropriate, as they move toward acquiring proficiency with authentic academic materials. Students will explore research material online and in the library and learn to formulate sustained and detailed arguments in their writing assignments that draw upon these readings for support. Synthesizing information and incorporating it into their essays is a primary goal. Understanding implications, nuances, hypothesizing, speculating, following arguments to logical conclusion: all are skills students need to work toward in this class.
