This course is an intensive study of the debates in North America and then the United States focusing on the proper relation between political authority and religious authority, law, or faith in their historical context. Topics may include Christianity in American politics, the role of the political principle of religious toleration in the West and in the United States, or the contemporary relation between religion and liberal democracy.
