UG.OLBS.CYBER - Cyber Security, BS Online
Program Overview
Program Description
While cybersecurity budgets and job market are expected to swell, the number of cybersecurity professionals is not growing fast enough to meet the demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for cybersecurity professionals grew 29% over the past 3 years and is projected to increase 28% over the next 10 years, much faster than projected employment growth across all occupations. With several initiatives attempting to address critical cybersecurity workforce development, an expansion of cybersecurity related education is one of the most important steps to secure the cyberspace. The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS), for example, considers cybersecurity education "essential to protecting the Nation's critical infrastructure." NICCS strongly recommends that "a new workforce needs to be educated and the current workforce needs additional skills." The proposed degree program aims at producing formally trained cybersecurity professionals who are in dire need and who possess the skills needed in the cybersecurity job field. It is an interdisciplinary program since cybersecurity is an area that requires strong problem-solving skills, robust understanding of computer systems, solid analytical skills, and firm awareness with laws and regulations pertaining to information security. In order to meet high cybersecurity academic standards, the curriculum for the proposed program has been carefully designed to include a variety of foundational, technical, analytical, and application courses. The curriculum would qualify students to pursue several cybersecurity career paths including information security analyst, digital forensics specialist, penetration tester, and security software developer. The curriculum consists of 51 major required credit hours, 12 major elective hours, 6 science elective credit hours, 6 general elective credit hours, and 45 institutional baccalaureate degree requirements for a total of 120 credit hours.
